The brief
A Golders Green semi with a back garden that had never quite settled into anything. Patchy lawn, uneven ground and no real place to sit or step out to. The clients wanted a proper outdoor room they could open the French doors onto, big enough to actually use, and set up to look after itself.
Our approach
A full hardwood deck running from the back of the house across the width of the garden. One flat, generous surface, sized to fit chairs, a table and the day-to-day of family life without feeling boxed in. Adjustable feet under the frame so the finished deck sits perfectly level over ground that was not.
The build
The build ran in a clear sequence: strip and level the site, lay a weed membrane, set out the perimeter subframe, build the joist grid on adjustable feet, then lay the hardwood boards over the top. Working out of the back doors of a lived-in house meant keeping the site tidy at the end of every day and staging materials so the family could still use the ground floor.
The result
A garden that finally works from the moment the doors open. The deck reads as one considered piece rather than a patio bolted onto a lawn, sits level across ground that used to be anything but, and is set up for years of low-fuss use.
